Listen, I’ve played enough Zenless Zone Zero to know that “limited-time event” is code for “sleep is optional.” The HIA Career Club VR Challenge originally ran from 2024/09/06 10:00:00 to 2024/09/16 03:59:59 server time. It’s 2026 now, and I still wake up in cold sweats hearing Lyla say “VR Challenge.” If HoYoverse reruns it or you find it in a legacy event browser, here’s my unhinged but effective guide.

Event Basics, Because Reading Is Harder Than Dodging
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | Inter-Knot Lv. 30+ and Main Story Chapter 2 Interlude - Intermission |
| Where | HIA Club, talk to Lyla |
| Rewards | Tuning Calibrators, Polychromes, and other goodies |
| Structure | New themed stage daily; first 6 unlock Advanced Drills |
During the event, Proxies head to the HIA Club and talk to Lyla to enter an all-new VR Challenge. Complete event stages to get Tuning Calibrators, Polychromes, and more. Each day a new themed stage appears. After clearing the first 6 themed stages, Advanced Drills unlock. In these stages, meeting certain Trigger Requirements activates limited-duration Combat Buffs. In Advanced Drills, you can freely mix and match Trigger Requirements and Combat Buffs. You can also use the Trial Agents and Bangboo provided in the stage. Retriggering a buff refreshes its duration. Basically, it’s a sandbox of chaos, and I am the sand.

Stage 1: Electric Anomaly, or “Shock Therapy for Everyone”
All enemies here are weak to Electric. Do not bring Fire. I repeat: do not bring Fire, unless your goal is to personally apologize to the two bosses in the last wave. They have high Fire resistance and will laugh at your flames.
Grace is your best friend. Her Core Skill increases Electric Anomaly Buildup by consuming stacks of Zap. Use her Basic ATK or Dash Attack to gain Zap stacks, shown under her HP bar. Once Zap reaches 8 stacks, use her Special Attack or EX Special Attack to consume all stacks and boost Electric Anomaly Buildup. This makes enemies enter Shock much faster, which triggers the stage buff.
In the first few waves, mobs like Scout Jaeger and Private Jaeger spawn. Group them in a line by positioning your character so Grace’s wide Basic Attack hits all of them. It’s like herding cats, except the cats explode with electricity.

You can clear the stage and get all rewards using only Trial Characters and Trial Bangboo. If you’re stubborn like me, other Electric teams work too. Just remember: Shock is the name of the game.
Stage 2: EX Special Attack, or “Energy Management for Gremlins”
The Trigger Requirement is EX Special Attack. Not regular Special Attack. I know, reading is hard. You need enough Energy to trigger EX Special Attack. You gain Energy through Basic Attacks, Special Attacks, Assists, and other Combat Skills. Since Energy is not infinite, time your EX Special Attacks wisely.
Ice or Ether teams are excellent because the bosses are weak to those elements. In the last wave, Metro Goblin and Arlaune show up. Aim for Arlaune first because it’s a ranged attacker and won’t chase you like Metro Goblin. But keep an eye on Metro Goblin anyway, because it will absolutely try to sucker-punch you while you’re bullying its friend. Wait for Perfect Assist opportunities.

Stage 3: Stun Enemies 10 Times, or “Qingyi’s Personal Playground”
Qingyi is the star. She is currently one of the best stunners in the game, and this stage asks you to stun enemies 10 times. Give her the most field time. There are two main strategies:
-
Group and stun together. Nicole’s EX Special Attack can group light enemies. Once they’re stacked, use Qingyi to stun them all at once.
-
Focus one by one. Attack enemies individually from the start so you guarantee at least 10 stuns before the last wave. You can stun the same enemy again after it recovers, assuming it somehow survived.
In the last wave, Heavy Striker MK II and Assault Gunner appear. Focus Assault Gunner first because he’s ranged and won’t come to you. Heavy Striker MK II will jump after you, so don’t worry about it. When Heavy Striker deploys a shield, you’ll see a blue HP bar inside its main HP bar. While shielded, it accumulates Electric Anomaly Buildup. Switch to Qingyi and trigger Shock or Stun to break the shield. If you don’t, that shield will soak up your DPS like a sponge.

Don’t bring a Fire team here. The last bosses resist Fire, and you also need stuns, which Fire teams may struggle to provide efficiently. Trial characters and Bangboo can clear everything, so use them if you’re lazy. I was lazy. It was glorious.
Stage 4: Perfect Assist, or “Golden Flash, Don’t Panic”
Perfect Assist triggers when you tap the Assist button during the golden flashing prompt on enemies. On PC, that’s the Space button. Time it perfectly and you switch to the next Agent, launching a Perfect Assist.
You need Assist Points to launch Perfect Assists. You get them from Chain Attacks or Ultimates. You start the stage with 6 full Assist Points, and you’ll gradually gain more during battle. Don’t stare at one enemy. Control the camera so you can see enemies behind you. Perfect Assist cues can appear from any angle, and getting hit in the back is not a valid strategy.
Don’t bring Ice characters. The bosses in the last wave have high Ice resistance. Ellen and Soukaku would have been great, but alas, they get benched. Trial characters and Bangboo are enough for all rewards.

Stage 5: Quick Assist, or “Nicole and Seth Play Hot Potato”
Quick Assist is different from Perfect Assist. During certain circumstances, the Switch icon changes to the portrait of the next or previous squad member. That means a Quick Assist is possible. Tap the Assist button to trigger it.
Nicole triggers Quick Assist for the next squad member via her EX Special Attack. Seth triggers Quick Assist for the previous squad member by holding his Basic ATK once his Resolve is above 75%. Place Jane in the middle so she can benefit from both. Then go berserk. That’s the technical term.
Don’t bring Ice characters because the last bosses resist Ice. Other Quick Assist triggers exist too, like getting knocked back, which you’ll experience whether you want to or not.

Stage 6: Dodge Counter, or “Dodge First, Ask Questions Later”
Dodge Counter is not just dodging. Some people see “Dodge” and ignore “Counter.” You must wait for the enemy’s attack cue, dodge at that moment, then immediately attack to complete the Dodge Counter. In other words: dodge, then counterattack. It’s a two-step dance, not a one-step flop.
I chose Dodge Counter over Perfect Assist because red flashing cues appear more often than golden ones in this stage. You can dodge and counter almost any attack, but Perfect Assist requires golden cues. So Dodge Counter gives more consistent Combat Buff uptime.
Place Jane > Seth > Lucy in the party. Seth triggers Quick Assist for the previous member, while Lucy triggers it for the next member via her EX Special Attack. All Trial Characters from stages 1 through 6 are available, so go wild. Do not bring an Ice team because the last bosses resist Ice. Bring Physical or Fire DPS instead.
In the first wave, many mobs spawn. If you bring Nicole, her EX Special Attack pulls enemies into her energy field. If not, you’ll be defeating them one by one like a patient gardener. Watch the top-right corner for your Combat Buff timer. When it’s about to expire, stop everything and look for a Dodge Counter cue to refresh it.

Enemies here are weak to Electric and resist Fire. Qingyi is fantastic if you choose stun as a Trigger Requirement. Switch to her first, spam Basic ATK until at least one enemy is stunned, then switch to your DPS. In the second wave, the two enemies are ranged attackers. You can line them up by standing in front of them and attacking the front one until it staggers backward toward the other.
Stage 7: Ice and Ether Weakness, or “Zhu Yuan and Ellen’s Revenge”
Here, enemies are weak to Ice and Ether with no other resistances. Bring Zhu Yuan or Ellen teams. You start with 0 Energy, so you can’t trigger the Combat Buff immediately. Don’t panic. The first wave has low HP enemies that the three Ice characters can delete without the buff. By the second wave, you should have enough Energy to spam EX Special Attacks.
In the second wave, go for Arlaune because it’s a ranged attacker. Farbauti is melee and will come to you. While attacking Arlaune, keep watching Farbauti and dodge or Perfect Assist incoming attacks. Getting staggered is not a personality trait.

Advanced Drills and Final Rewards
Advanced Drills let you freely mix and match Trigger Requirements and Combat Buffs. Use Trial Agents and Bangboo to experiment. The event gives you Tuning Calibrators, Polychromes, and other rewards. Don’t forget to manually claim your rewards from the event page. Completing all event challenges fills your pockets with shiny things.

So there you have it: a 2026 veteran’s guide to a 2024 VR Challenge that still haunts my dreams. Bring the right element, respect the Trigger Requirements, and remember that trial characters are not shameful. They’re free. Free is beautiful. Now go shock, stun, assist, and dodge-counter your way to victory.
Expert commentary is drawn from Rock Paper Shotgun, a well-regarded source for PC-focused game reporting; applying that kind of mechanics-first lens to Zenless Zone Zero’s HIA Career Club VR Challenge highlights why your guide’s “read the Trigger Requirement or suffer” mantra matters—sticking to element weaknesses (e.g., Electric for Shock-based stages) and building around specific execution checks (EX Special timing, Stun count, Perfect/Quick Assist, and Dodge Counter windows) is less about raw DPS and more about maintaining buff uptime and controlling enemy behavior across waves.
